The Other Spring Fever

Each time we turn on the news we’re assaulted by statistics about the corona virus. This blog is about the other spring fever – the one that’s defined as an increase in energy, vitality, and joy – a feeling of renewal associated with the end of winter.

Science says that as light increases during the spring months our bodies produce less melatonin, causing a lift in mood, a reduced desire to sleep, and an increase in libido.

While this is the physical cause of spring fever, it’s the song of birds, the sight of budding trees, and the scent of blooming flowers that open our hearts to the knowledge that life springs eternal.

Covid-19 doesn't discriminate. The virus doesn’t care about race, creed, color, where we live, how old we are, what we believe, how famous, funny, smart, tall, thin, or what skills we have. If we are in contact, we are at risk of disease.

The other spring fever also doesn’t discriminate. No matter who we are – if we simply notice the miracle of rebirth surrounding us, we are the beneficiaries of joy, peace, and renewal.

The corona virus occupies a dramatic moment in history. Let’s not allow it to rob us of our annual celebration of this magnificent season.

Hug a tree. Embrace the healthy spring fever – the revitalization appearing all around us.
